Bloom Box from Bloom Energy | K R Sridhar

bloom energy serverBloom Box Concept : Bloom Energy Server

Bloom Box or Bloom Energy Server is a power station in a box which generate electricity using liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons like gasoline, diesel, propane etc produced from fossil or bio sources.

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) converts hydrocarbon fuel into electricity at very high efficiency and with significantly reduced C02, NOx and SOx emissions. Bloom’s Energy Server™ is a new class of distributed power generator, producing clean, reliable, affordable electricity at the customer site.

Bloom Energy and K R Sridhar

Bloom Box was developed by California based company named Bloom Energy started by Indian K R Sridhar. He completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering from NIT Trichy and moved to US in 1980s. He completed his master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering and Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He started Bloom Energy in 2002. Prior to founding Bloom Energy, Dr. KR Sridhar was Director of the Space Technologies Laboratory (STL) at the University of Arizona where he was also a professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering.

Bloom Box Usage

At present Bloom Box’s initial expense is very high so only few corporates are using it like Google, eBay, Walmart, Bank of America, FedEx, Coca Cola etc.

A 100 KW Bloom Server costs around 3.5 crore Indian Rupees with a 10 year life span. But Bloom Energy is expected to bring home sized 1km bloom boxes at a price tag of 1.5 lakhs in near future.

Bloom Energy Server Advantages

Some of the main advantage of this system is low running cost, environment-friendly, no volatility, quick access to power, improved energy security and reliability.

Bloom Energy in India

In India Bloom Energy Server concept has a large potential especially in rural areas. Also power cuts and power deficiency is a major problem hurting business and investments in many states in India. Even though it cannot produce large amount of power it can become an alternate source of power to businesses as well as households and can help to light up remote villages where power is still a dream.

Bloom Energy also has an office in India at Mumbai : Bloomenergy (India) Private Limited (BEIPL).

  1. I am very much for the onsite generation of energy whether it’s for a large factory or a small farmhouse. It gives a certain feeling of independence to the user.

I’m really excited that a bloom energy server for an average home would be available during the nxt decade. Please reserve a unit for me if the cost is around $3000/-

I wish Godspeed & best of luck to Dr. K.R. Sridhar
