Google’s new Picture Format : WebP

To make web faster Google has announced a new picture file format called WebP (pronounced weppy).

At present the web is dominated with JPEG format and there are many other formats like GIF, PNG etc but all these formats were developed almost a decade back.

According to Google by moving to the new WebP format from JPEG you will be able to save an average of 40% in terms of file size which will helps to download images faster and overall net browsing speed will increase accordingly.

WebP is a method of lossy compression and the degree of compression is adjustable so a user can choose the trade-off between file size and image quality.

WebP uses predictive coding to encode an image, the same methodology used by the VP8 video codec to compress keyframes in videos.

At present Google provides a Linux version to convert the existing picture files to WebP format – a lightweight decoder for WebP files (libvpx) and a command line tool (webpconv).
