200000 Android devices sold every day : Schmidt

Google CEO Eric Schmidt yesterday said that as per Google’s data there are around 2 lakh android based devices sold every day worldwide.

Android is an operating system developed by Google based on the Linux Kernel – used it mobile phones, tablet computers and netbooks. Open Handset Alliance – a business alliance of 65 companies including Google is now handing development works in Android platform.

In March Google launched 7th version of Android code named Froyo or Android 2.2 and now handset manufacturers are releasing devices based on that.

Eighth version of Android (3.0) code named Gingerbread is expected by end of this year.

"The number was about 1 lakh a day about two months ago," Schmidt said.

In the second quarter of 2010 Android based devices topped US smartphone market with a 33% share, followed by Blackberry OS (28%) and Apple’s iOS (22%)

Even though Google doesn’t get revenue from Android itself, Schmidt said Google loves the success of Android because it means more people have phones capable of doing lots of Web searches for which it does get paid.

Google also announced on Wednesday that it is halting development on Google Wave, a real-time collaboration tool aiming to combine various forms of online communication.

Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview 4

Microsoft today announced the fourth developer preview its next generation browser Internet Explorer 9.

Version 9 is one of the much anticipated release of Internet Explorer in the developer community as its previous developer previews were downloaded more than 2.5 million times.

IE9 offers consistent, fully hardware-accelerated text, graphics, and media, both audio and video.

Building on hardware-accelerated SVG, canvas, video, audio, and text, developers will use the power of the whole PC to achieve great performance.

IE9 also supports the HTML5 video and audio tags and the Web Open Font Format.

With new JavaScript engine IE9 is expected to perform faster and with full HTML support it is expected to regain its lost market share in Browser market. after the success of Internet Explorer 8 Microsoft is spending more time to bring IE9 as a powerful product.

Internet Explorer Public Beta is expected by October 2010.

IE9 is not going to make any significant impact in India because it required either Windows Vista or Windows 7. In India still majority of computers running with Windows XP or lower versions. So most of the India users will not be able to upgrade to IE9 when it comes.

Samsung, Motorola and HTC Froyo Update

After Android 2.2 (Froyo) was released in March 2010, handset manufacturers across the world are working on it to implement in their smartphones and tablets.

In a twitter update Samsung announced that its Android based phones will be upgraded to Froyo support by Sep 2010. Also this week firmware of Samsung Galaxy S leaked and which was based on Android 2.2

HTC Desire and HTC Evo 4G to get Android 2.2 update next week. Sprint will begin rolling out the Android 2.2 upgrade to EVO users on Tuesday, August 3 in US.

After Sprint’s announcement, Verizon also announced that it will upgrade Motorola Droid to Froyo by first week of August.

Android 2.2 or Froyo

Android is an operating system developed by Google based on the Linux Kernel – mainly used it mobile phones, tablet computers and netbooks. Initially Android Inc developed this mobile OS and later Google purchased it. Now Open Handset Alliance – a business alliance of 65 companies including Google, Intel, Dell, Motorola, Samsung, LG, T Mobile, HTC is now handing development works in Android platform.

Currently more than 1 lakh Android based smartphones sold per day worldwide and 50,000 Android based apps available. Blackberry OS is the leading OS in mobile platform developed by Blackberry and Android comes in the second position followed by Apple’s iOS.

At present most of the Android based devices works on Android 2.1. Latest (7th) version  of Android was released in March 2010 code named “FroYo” based on Linux Kernel 2.6.32.

Some important enhancement in Android 2.2 are

  • Improved Speed with Dalvik JIT compiler (expected 2 to 5 times faster than 2.1)
  • Install apps on SM memory card
  • Faster Browsing experience with V8 javascript engine
  • Improved security and numeric or alpha numeric password option
  • Adobe Flash 10.1 and AIR support
  • Apps Auto updating after download
  • Synchronize music collections
  • General Android OS speed, memory, and performance optimizations
  • USB tethering and WiFi hotspot functionality
  • Quick switching between multiple keyboard languages and their dictionaries
  • Increased Microsoft Exchange support

 

Currently Android based smartphone and tablet manufacturers are either upgrading their devices to support Android 2.2 or releasing new devices based on it.

Another major version of Android (3.0) code named Gingerbread is expected by end of this year.

Download new Rupee Symbol Font from foradian technologies

Mangalore based software company Foradian Technologies developed a font for New Indian Rupee Symbol named Rupee Foradian.

Download Rupee Symbol / Rupee Font (2.0)

new rupee symbol fontDownload the Rupee_Foradian.ttf file first then open control panel –> fonts and copy the file this folder.

Once copied it will automatically available for use. If it doesn’t work then just restart the system.

Government of India last week only finalized the new Rupee Symbol which take Indian Rupee to the elite club of currencies with a specific symbol.

New Symbol is expected to get wider reach in few months but a Government of India is expected to popularize the new symbol in 1-2 years.

Mozilla releases Firefox 4 Beta

Mozilla today released first public beta of Firefox 4.0, its free open source web browser. The new Firefox 4.0 is based on the Gecko 2.0 web platform.

Firefox 4.0 beta comes with many new features like new tab location like Google Chrome, new add-ons manager, support for WebM format to watch HD video, enhanced privacy, new html 5 parser, jetpack SDK etc.

At present Firefox 4 beta is available only for Windows but mozilla will soon release Mac and Linux versions.
