Tamil Cinema Industry : Kollywood

Cinema of Tamilnadu, the Southern state of India, has a rich culture. The Tamil film industry, popularly known as Kollywood, has gifted the Indian film industry, a large number of talents to the various aspects of Cinema.

The heart of Tamil Cinema industry is Kodambakkam in Chennai city. Kodambakkam was the hub of South Indian Cinema in the past. Other language films were also shot in Kodambakkam. Now the Indian Cinema has flourished and has spread its wings to various parts of the globe.

The Tamil film market accounts for approximately 0.1% of the gross domestic product of the state of Tamil Nadu.

Tamil cinema was dominated by P. U. Chinnappa and M. K. Thyagaraja Bagavadhar up until the end of the 1940s. Later from 1950's onwards, two of the ever great stars of Tamil cinema dominated the scene : M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) and Sivaji Ganesan. There after Tamil films produced a good number of world famous actors and actresses like Kamalhasan, Rajnikant, Ajith Kumar, Vijay, Surya, VijayaKumar, Siva Kumar, Vijayakanth, Vikram, Dhanush, Bharath, Manorama, Bhanupriya, Geetha, Jyothika Saravanan, Asin Thottumkal, Kushboo, Meena, and Devayani, to name a few.

There are some very popular Music directors like A.R. Rahman and Illyaraja from the Tamil industry. Like wise, there are many popular names in every field of Tamil Cinema.
